Ships, Passenger Lists, & Ellis Island

Immigrants arriving at Ellis Island, 1902
Tip on passenger lists: the National Archives can give you the names and departure dates of  ships leaving Oslo and Bergen for the US. (However, if your ancestors left Norway for Quebec before 1865, no lists are available.)

Norway Heritage
Passenger lists and emigrant ships from Norway Heritage. Find information about ships and passenger lines, search for passenger names, and read articles describing how, and where, to look for passenger information about Norwegian emigrants.

The Transatlantic Crossing
Interesting description of how our Norwegian ancestors sailed across the Atlantic from 1825 to 1925.  Describes the shipboard living conditions they faced.  Includes some interesting first-hand accounts.

The Ships List
Find your ancestors on ships' passenger lists. Also has immigration reports, newspaper records, shipwreck information, ship pictures, ship descriptions, shipping-line fleet lists and more; as well as hundreds of passenger lists to Canada, USA, Australia and even some for South Africa.

Statue of Liberty-Ellis Island Foundation
Searchable site for immigration into Ellis Island (from 1892 to 1924). Search by passenger or by ship.
