Tales of Past & Present: Author and Filmmaker Kirk Kjeldsen

Kirk Kjeldsen
Saturday, June 24, 2017
Potluck at 5:00 p.m., followed by presentation
Norway House, Fairfax, VA (directions)

Author and filmmaker Kirk Kjeldsen will discuss his novel Land of Hidden Fires, and how it led to his next project, the feature film Gavagai, which was shot in Norway in 2015. Professor Kjeldsen is on the faculty of the Virginia Commonwealth University Cinema Arts Department, which provided support for the film. Non-members are welcome.

Land of Hidden Fires was inspired by the author's great-grandfather's brother who, as a member of the Norwegian resistance during the World War II German occupation, assisted stranded members of the U.S. Air Force to get safely into Sweden. Gavagai, on the other hand, relates a present-day story -- the seemingly impossible translation into Chinese of some poems by Norway's literary giant, Tarjei Vesaas. Come to the June meeting to find out how researching the WWII story led to this film.

The Lodge Reading Circle will discuss Land of Hidden Fires on June 20.

Membership pins will also be awarded at the June meeting. Email questions about the Lodge meeting to editor@norwaydc.org
