The Viking Longhouse

Norway House (directions)

Lodge members Owen and Elspeth Christianson have studied Viking-age Scandinavia for over 40 years. In 2011 they built a replica longhouse on their land near Stratford, Wisconsin and soon began hosting Viking camp weekends for UW-Green Bay students. Based on their experience at the longhouse, UWGB students have gone on to create their own experimental archeology projects.

At our June meeting, Owen and Elspeth will share their knowledge of Viking longhouse culture and their experience building this particular house. Elspeth will also discuss how cooking was done in this type of dwelling.

The Christiansons recently moved to Reston from Wisconsin. Owen is a research scientist specializing in superconductivity and cryogenics, and has held several SON leadership positions including past president of SON District 5. Elspeth is a physician (retired) specializing in pediatric genetics. We are so happy they are now members of our Lodge!

If you plan to bring children please send an email to so appropriate activities can be arranged.
