Book Review: When the Devil Holds the Candle

When the Devil Holds the Candle
by Karin Fossum
1998

Karin Fossum is Norway’s Queen of Crime. The Reading Circle selected her novel, When the Devil Holds the Candle, for its September 2009 reading. Some Circle members liked it, others did not. I myself found it rather intriguing.

Inspector Sejer and his deputy Jacob Skarre have to deal with a bizarre cast of characters:
Irma, a lonely woman lacking in social skills, and two friends, Andreas and Zipp, local delinquents. At a certain point the lives of the three intersect and, shortly thereafter, Andreas abruptly disappears. Irma knows where he is; Zipp begins to suspect where he is. Sejer is unaware of the connection between Irma and the friends; Irma and Zipp, both lacking a moral compass, do not give him any assistance. This book is available from amazon.com. Read it at your own risk!
